DIY: Repotting Plants.

I'm slightly crazy about houseplants, flowers and anything green that grows in general. Houseplants remind me of my darling Granny. She had them everywhere! So in honor of her I bought a plant to sit in my kitchen window. It makes me so happy to see those green little leaves reaching for the light.....oh how I know that yearning....that searching for the sun. So if you have a hankering to grow plants indoors here are a few tips that might be of help to you.


I picked this up from Walmart for $2.75. I already had the pot. You can view the tutorial for polka dotting pots that I did in 2010 here!

When you take the plant out of the pot it will look like this.........root bound.


Break the roots loose and unwrap and roots that are wrapped around the root wad.


When I broke the roots loose a couple babies fell off. I planted these in a separate pot.


This plant likes to put off roots off of the stems. (yes that is spray paint on my fingers. *grin*) I broke a couple of these off and stuck in a jar of water to root.



Fill the bottom of your pot around a third of the way full then put the root wad in and dirt around it. Put in a spot that receives sunlight, water and watch grow!

Coffee Filter Flowers {Tutorial}

These coffee filter flowers are so fun and easy to make! You can make a huge focal point in a small amount of time with these. My inspiration came from a picture I found on a lady's blog and now I can't find it again. She decorated a coffee shop with these but they were huge! (If you have a link to that blog please post it in the comment section) You can also vary the size of these by gluing the filters closer to the edge or farther in. You can also leave the filters in the back unfolded to get a bigger flower. I used the paper type plates, not the foam plates because the glue melts the plate.

The options are endless with these, a friend suggested dip dying or water-coloring them. You could also spray paint them.

Chevy Headband Tutorial

Supplies needed:

2: 5x8" pieces of fabric
1: 1.5x3" piece of fabric
Headband
Glue gun/glue sticks



1. With right sides together sew around the rectangle leaving an opening (not shown). After sewing clip corners then turn inside out pulling thru opening.


2. Fold the small piece of fabric in thirds and iron.


3. Now you should have three pieces. All fabric pieces should be ironed.


4. Glue the opening closed.


5. Pinch bow together in the middle.


6. Put a dab of glue on headband and pinch bow to the glue.


7. Take the smaller strip of fabric and glue the center onto the center of the pinched bow.


8. Glue one side of the strip all the way around the side to the back of the bow.


9. Glue the other side around to the back as well but leave a tail.


10. Turn the tail under and glue down.



11. Glue the headband to the bow.


Done!

Paper Doily Flower Tutorial DIY {Magpied}

Supplies needed:

Paper doilies (I used 8" but any size would work)

Foam board or cardboard

Xacto knife

Hot glue gun

Stapler



Instructions:

1. Gather needed supplies.
Cut a circle out of foam or cardboard.

2. Glue one flat doily to the foam circle.

3. As shown in picture #4, take a doily, fold it in half..only pinching together in the middle. Then, fold over again and staple at the corner.

4. Make 5 of these to create 1 flower.





5. Flip over flat doily so that foam is facing down.

6. Lining up the edge of the folded up doily with the edge of the flat doily, glue in the center.

7 & 8. Continue gluing folded doilies on, making sure they meet up nicely on the edges.




9, 10, & 11: Glue four of the folded doilies to the flat one, only leaving an opening at the top.

12. Taking the last folded doily, insert it into the empty spot on top, adjusting it as needed by folding the stapled end. When satisfied, glue down.



13, 14: Taking a teensy spot of glue, connect the doilies to each other so that there aren't any open holes.

15. Finished product!

16. There are a variety of ways to use these. Poke a hole into the circle of foam, tie a string through it and hang. Make several of these in an array of sizes and create a chandelier or garland...or come up with your own unique use for them.:)

Butterfly Bow Tutorial {Magpied/Lilly Anna Kids}

 

Materials needed:

Various scraps of lace or fabric

Alligator clips

Glue gun and glue sticks

 

1: supplies

2: grab the middle of the lace or fabric and start gathering it up

3: gathered

4: wrap the small piece around the middle, using a small dab of glue to attach



5: leave a tail

6: clip the alligator onto the tail

7: put glue on the back of bow and pull tail with clip over onto glue

8: finish wrapping tail around one more time and glue the end under the alligator clip



And you're done!

DIY/Tutorial: Jute Lampshade

My last blog post was about the jute globe I made to go over my table. I decided to use the leftover jute to cover a lampshade that had been begging for a re-do. I got this lamp at a thrift shop but never liked the shade fabric. LOTS of glue and time later I had a new shade! Remember the bigger the jute quicker you will get done. This shade took me around 3 hours to cover (over the course of 2 days). I didn't cover the top and bottom of the lamp with a singe strand of jute, I braided two pieces and glued them around the top and bottom...
